first week after leg amputation for cancer

Finnigan, our 9 year old miniature poodle, lost his left front leg on Nov. 14th. His biopsy shows that he had a grade 2 mast cell tumour. It is now 8 days since his surgery. Each day he makes new advances. On day 2, he hopped outside to pee. On day 3, he hopped outside to poop and pee. On day 4, he hopped up the 3 stairs from the lawn to our porch. On day 5, he led me down our lane to go for a 5 minute walk. On day 6, he led me down our path to the lake….. his favorite walking trail. He walked with great enthusiasm and I had to carry him part way home as he had overdone it. On day 7, he went up the stairs to the second floor!

He is returning to his old self and his eyes are lit up with his customary joy. Today we head down to the lake and go a little further on our old walking trail. I can’t wait to be a part of Finnigan’s new adventures on 3 paws on day 9! I am hoping we can get him on an effective preventative cancer pill. We see his oncologist this coming Thursday. Any suggestions? Palladia and prednisone failed to shrink his tumour pre-surgery…. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  1. Finnigan and family, we’re so glad to hear things are going so well and you’re bouncing back!

I hope you don’t mind but I adjusted a setting on your blog so that it shows up on the Tripawds blogroll, which means that others will see whenever you post. We have lots of folks who’ve dealt with mast cell cancers and they can offer you great advice. I’ll point out your blog in our Forums but be sure to visit them too for lots of tips. See you there!

  2. Hi Jerry,

Thanks so much for posting my blog for Finnigan on the blogroll. I look forward to receiving some helpful comments.
    We see the oncologist tomorrow a.m. for Finnigan’s 2 week check-up post-op.
This a.m. I found a small pimple beside his nose. I e-mailed a picture of this to my regular vet and she says it looks like a tumour! I am beside myself….. Finnigan has been doing so well…. We are following Dr. Ettinger’s book on dog cancer and Dr. Eisen’s recommendations in his book….. Finnigan is now eating no processed food…. Delicious recipes and otherwise is loving life…. I am hoping and praying…
