first week after leg amputation for cancer

Finnigan, our 9 year old miniature poodle, lost his left front leg on Nov. 14th. His biopsy shows that he had a grade 2 mast cell tumour. It is now 8 days since his surgery. Each day he makes new advances. On day 2, he hopped outside to pee. On day 3, he hopped outside to poop and pee. On day 4, he hopped up the 3 stairs from the lawn to our porch. On day 5, he led me down our lane to go for a 5 minute walk. On day 6, he led me down our path to the lake….. his favorite walking trail. He walked with great enthusiasm and I had to carry him part way home as he had overdone it. On day 7, he went up the stairs to the second floor!

He is returning to his old self and his eyes are lit up with his customary joy. Today we head down to the lake and go a little further on our old walking trail. I can’t wait to be a part of Finnigan’s new adventures on 3 paws on day 9! I am hoping we can get him on an effective preventative cancer pill. We see his oncologist this coming Thursday. Any suggestions? Palladia and prednisone failed to shrink his tumour pre-surgery…. Thanks for sharing your experience!
